WHOIS is a tool used to query the internet databases that store information about registered domains. These databases contain details about who owns a domain, when they activated it and when it expires. WHOIS is often used as a way to find contact information pertaining to the owner of the domain. When a person or organization registers a domain with a registry, such as Namecheap.com or godaddy.com, the information supplied during the registration process is sent to the Top Level Domain (TLD) manager for storage and finalization.
